What is Virga?
(WTAJ) – Have you ever see rain not reach the ground? This is called virga. Virga is when a shaft or a streak of rain doesn’t reach the ground.
Why doesn’t the rain reach the ground?
The rain evaporates as it is falling to the ground. This happens when the rain falls through very dry air. The dry air and the sun changes the rain (liquid) back into water vapor (gas). Some droplets can and do reach the ground but the majority of the rain shaft drys out and evaporates back into the air.
