From Winter to Spring, Why The Big Change In Our Temperatures

Last week Central Pennsylvania had temperatures below zero and today (Monday, Feb 4th) the temperatures reached the upper 50s to the lower 60s. So why the big change to our weather?

The Setup: A ridge of high pressure pushed the artic temperatures back north into Canada. But, high pressure isn’t enought to bring the Spring like warmth to Central Pennsylvania. The high pressure needs a little bit of help. A low pressure system northwest of Pennsylvnaia is that help. Ahead of the cold front the winds are coming from the south. The southernly componet of the wind helps pump in warmer air from our southern states into Central Pennsylvania. It is the combination of high pressure to our south and the winds coming from the south that makes our temperatuers soar.

The Week Ahead: You can expect the same pattern to continue for the next couple of days. The temperatures this week will stay above average until this upcoming weekend.
