Ask Joe – Will this dry March lead to an upcoming drought?

This month will likely come in as a drier than average month, and during the spring, one of the concerns of gardeners and farmers are drought. However, drought is a long term deficit of rainfall and takes a long time to develop. While this month will come in drier, the fact is it is the first drier than average month since last March. Also, the excess of precipitation in January and February will leave us with above average precipitation for the year. Putting this all together would suggest that this recent drying is either the end or a break in what is a very wet pattern rather than the likely start of a drought.
