Ask Joe – Where does the moisture from hurricanes come from?

Weather

Today’s question came from Jim via email. He wanted to know that if the rain we get from tropical storms and hurricanes in the deep south really comes from the ocean or does it pick up new moisture on the way.

The answer is a little bit of both. Some of the moisture is in the atmosphere being evaporated from the ocean. Some of the moisture though is recycled from evaporation from the ground and the rain of the storm itself as it moves over land.
