Penn State holds off Iowa late

The 17th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions welcome in the 18th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes to Beaver Stadium Saturday afternoon.

1st Quarter:

Penn State wins the toss and will receive.

Nittany Lions go three and out, but then Blake Gilliken’s punt is blocked and goes out of the back of the endzone. The result is a safety and Iowa has an early 2-0 lead.

On the Hawkeyes first possession, Penn State forces a fumble but can’t pounce on the loose ball, and Iowa maintains possession.

On 3rd and 1 from the Penn State 20, the Nittany Lions stuff the Hawkeyes for no gain but a facemask penalty keeps the drive alive. However, Iowa can only get a field goal out of the drive. 10:13 left in the 1st quarter, Iowa 5 Penn State 0.

Penn State goes 3-and-out again. Pat Freiermuth with a offensive pass interference penalty, pushing the Nittany Lions back. Iowa takes over at the Penn State 42.

Iowa fumbles again, but recovers, followed by the Hawkeyes picking up a first down. Penn State holds, but Iowa fakes the field goal and it goes for 6. Iowa 12 Penn State 0. Hawkeyes tried something similar on their first field goal attempt before getting a delay of game.

Penn State moves the ball on their next drive, convert a 4th and 3 to keep the drive moving into the redzone, followed by a TD pass from McSorley to Freiermouth. Iowa 12 Penn State 7. 0:27 left in the 1st.

2nd Quarter

Penn State forces a 3-and-out and will take over at its own 27.

Trace McSorley goes down on 3rd down and is injured. He is helped off the field. It did not look good. On the ensuing play, the ball is snapped over Gilliken’s head and goes out of the endzone for another safety. Penn State special teams rearing its ugly head early. Iowa 14 Penn State 7.

Iowa QB Nathan Stanley overthrows a wide open tight end. I mean, he was open by like 30 yards, and Stanley missed him. Big break for Penn State. On 4th and 1, Shareef Miller jumps offsides to give the Hawkeyes a fresh set of downs. Robert Windsor sacks Nathan Stanley, which eventually forces Iowa to punt.

Tommy Stevens in at QB who picks up a 3rd and 9 with his legs, but eventually Penn State has to punt. 7:44 left in the 1st half. Iowa 14 Penn State 7.

John Reid comes up with a big interception and returns it to the Iowa 3 yard line. Tommy Stevens scores on the next play. Penn State 14 Iowa 14.

Iowa gets a big kickoff return and that leads to a 49 yard field goal. Iowa 17 Penn State 14.

Trace McSorley returns to the game for Penn State, bu the Nittany Lions go 3-and-out.

Stanley and the center with a little miscommunication, Iowa fumbles but recovers…… again. Fumble luck on Iowa’s side today. Less than a minute till halftime.

Penn State holds on 4th down, has some time to get points before the half. Tommy Stevens back in at QB. Jake Pinegar hits from 45 yards out. Penn State 17 Iowa 17 at the half.

3rd Quarter

Penn State’s Trace McSorley runs for 51 yards for a touchdown to put Penn State up 24-17.

Penn State kicks a field goal, 27-17.

4th Quarter

Trace McSorley throws interception, Iowa runs it in for a pick 6. 27-24, PSU leads with 10:00 left to play.

Penn State kicks field goal, they lead 30-24.

Lions win 30-24 against Iowa.
