HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — According to documents from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an employee of a site contractor at Three Mile Island was killed during a “material handling accident” on Friday, Sept. 10 around 11 a.m.

The employee, later identified as 55-year-old Michael Miller of Alabama, was killed while unloading equipment from a truck according to a regional communications manager at Exelon Generation. One day after the incident, an autopsy revealed Miller’s cause of death as traumatic asphyxia. The manner was ruled accidental.

A press release from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission stated Miller was working under a contract outside of the Radiological Controlled Area at the time of the incident.

The press release adds that Londonderry Township EMS and Fire crews responded to render aid, but Miller was declared dead shortly after crews arrived.

In a company statement, Exelon Generation regional communications manager, Dave Marcheskie said, “We are deeply saddened that a contract worker was fatally injured around 11 a.m. on Friday while unloading equipment from a truck at Three Mile Island. We send our condolences to the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues.”
