A proposed action sports park is causing a stir among one State College community.
Some who live near Orchard Park have concerns over hearing about the park being considered for an action sports park to be built, bringing in activities such as biking and skateboarding.
The idea was proposed by local BMX bike legend Jamie Bestwick to Centre Region Parks & Recreation in 2013.
Neighbors who live near the park say they aren’t against the action sports park, but would like to see it elsewhere.
“There’s far better locations in State College and the Centre Region that would accommodate something of this magnitude far more comfortably,” Shannon Jones, a State College borough resident said.
Proponents of the idea view it as a way to provide more opportunities for an active community.
“We’re just looking for somewhere where we can make something both aesthetically beautiful but also provides a great avenue for the kids,” Bestwick said.
Orchard Park is one of 13 parks in the borough being considered for the action sports park.
The concept has been mentioned several times in the borough’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
If approved, construction could start in 2018.
A public hearing is scheduled for August 1 at 7 p.m. at the State College Municipal Building for anyone interested in learning more.
