Friday night severe storms swept across portions of our area. In Richvale, Huntingdon County an EF-1 tornado was confirmed with winds up to 110 mph. The tornado traveled about 5 miles.
Saturday’s storms brought hail, and damaging winds to northern areas. A lot of hail was reported in Elk County.
Hail is formed from winds in a thunderstorm that are moving upwards. The winds carry water droplets to a layer of air that is cold that the water freezes. More water droplets will then freeze onto the already frozen droplets. This will continue until the hail is too heavy for the winds to move it up again and it will fall to the ground.
