United Way of Centre County raises more than $67,000 over their yearly campaign goal

The United Way of Centre County raised more than sixty seven thousand dollars over their yearly campaign goal last year.

Jeannie Shuey was born with excessive anxiety disorder and depression.
She comes to Strawberry Fields, the non-profit human service agency in State College, twice a week to get support.

“We come here and talk with other people about their disabilities,” Jeannie Shuey, “Peer” at Strawberry Fields  “They have a topic on different things, like depression, anxiety, and how to cope with your mental problems.”

Jeannie’s “Peer” or mentor, at Strawberry Fields, Sherry Skelton says she’s worked with Jeannie to help ease her anxiety by talking, and keeping her hands busy.

“When I first met Jeannie, she was a lot more anxious then she is now, she’s getting out more,” Sherry Skelton, Certified Peer Specialist at Strawberry Fields said.

Strawberry Fields is one of 29 community partners that receives money from the United Way of Centre County.
All of those organizations help people with financial, intellectual, social or physical needs.
Last year the United Way of Centre County’s campaign goal was one million, eight hundred fifty thousand dollars.
But because so many people donated they were able to raise more than one point nine million dollars.
“Our agencies are always struggling to make ends meet, they could always use a little more and this is really going to help,” Tammy Gentzel, Executive Director, for Centre County United Way.
Jeannie knows she wouldn’t be able to benefit from Strawberry Fields if it wasn’t for groups like united way that fund them.
“Without them I don’t think Strawberry Fields would be going that strong,” Jeannie said.
In late May, the United Way of Centre County’s Board of Directors will learn what the organizations they support say they need.

The money will be sent to those groups in July.
