We’ve been getting reports Thursday of underground explosions in the Bellefonte area.

Penn State seismic professor Andy Nyblade is investigating this. He tells WTAJ these events have not risen to the level of an earthquake. His best guess so far is that it could be mines that are collapsing underground. He says people have been reporting the noises to police for several months now. The biggest one appears to have happened Thursday afternoon around 2:29 p.m.

It happened in some fields right near the Centre County Prison.

What they want to do is look at some DEP maps of the area and see if the seismic activity coordinates with old mine locations.
