All aboard! Founded in 1949 the Altoona Association of Model Railroaders has amazing model train layouts, and for its volunteers it’s a hobby that they love to share.
“I mean this is a dream come true for us guys that love it,” Club member Tim Heidler said. “Anyone that loves trains this is the place to be .”
“We run trains,” Dana Carpenter said. “We have a lot of history in this club.”
Carpenter — who now serves as the club’s secretary said that her involvement in the association start with the love of trains that her kids had.
“I used to take my kids over to watch trains over behind what is now the medical center, and i met a rail roader there a former railroader who brought me over to the club and the rest is history,” she said.
It’s those railroaders and other train enthusiast that keep this club and love for model trains on track.
“There’s a lot of love in this layout; there’s a lot of guys that have devoted their whole lives to it,” Heidler said.
“We actually have three layouts with the o scale the h/o and the on the lower level,” Carpenter said.
It’s just the start of what you can see at the Altoona Association of Model Railroaders.
“We have number plates, builder plates, bells from former trains, we have all kinds of plaques,” Carpenter said.
“This here especially this wall these are all Pennsa locomotive plates from Pennsa locomotives from back in the day,” Heidler said.
If you’re looking to visit the club and take part in all the fun, there’s really no better time of year to see the trains coming around the mountain.
“People always had trains running under the Christmas tree, and when I was a kid when you were a kid come in, Carpenter said. “Visit our club see what we have to offer and for heavens sake just come in and enjoy the trains like I do!”
