This week is Groundwater Awareness Week nationally and in Ferguson Township.
Township officials are reminding people on social media of the importance of monitoring what goes into the groundwater to make sure it’s safe.
The township says this will help make sure harmful material stays out of our water.
David Pribulka, Manager for Ferguson Township says, with all the extra ground water we have from the rains and snows this year, it’s important to know how our daily life affects the water that other people could use.
“It could be as simple as being careful of washing your car and the soaps and solvents that you use to wash your car that make their way into the storm drains and find their way into the groundwater,” Pribulka said. “What pesticides your applying to your lawn?”
In January the township passed the source water protection ordinance, which made some regulations and reporting required for certain kinds of land uses. Pribulka says this will help the township make sure potentially harmful things aren’t getting into our water.
