Students win recycling calendar art contest

Local News

15 students in Centre County are being recognized for encouraging their community to “go green.”

They submitted designs for the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Read” poster contest, which was hosted by the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority. along with Centre Daily Times and Weis Markets.

Hundreds of posters were submitted, but these are the lucky fifteen:

Ally Duncan, Gray’s Woods Elementary School

Blake Wheeler, Wingate Elementary School

Cedric Bagwell, Benner Elementary School

Emily Lovrak, Pleasant Gap Elementary School

Emma Haagen, Marion Walker Elementary Schoo

Erika Lucas, Philipsburg-Osceola Middle School

Hannah Rose Craig, Our Lady of Victory

Isabel Olson, Gray’s Woods Elementary School

Jade Brown, Pleasant Gap Elementary School

Lillian Hodges,  Centre Learning Community Charter School

Madison Stimer, Port Matilda Elementary School

Marinn Peters, Penns Valley Intermediate School

Poppy Rusca, Park Forest Elementary School

Sena Andrews, Mountain Top Elementary School

Taylor Brown, Marion Walker Elementary School.

They all attend 5th grade throughout the county.

They said they learned a lot during the design process.

“You can put a creative spin on recycling and whatnot. You can literally reuse a boot to make a pot. Instead of buying a pot. Wasting your money, instead of just using something that you would have  to throw away anyway,” Cedric Bagwell said.

“The nature is going away because we litter and are not nice to the Earth. But if we’re nice to the Earth again then the nature will come back,” Ally Duncan said.

The 2018 calendar will be distributed to all 5th graders in Centre County in December.

And they’ll be available at Weis Markets.
