Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association and the State College Borough unveiled their “You are Welcome Here” banner initiative, to show their commitment to diversity and equality.
“We welcome you as our neighbors, our teachers, our students and our colleagues,” State College Mayor Don Hahn said.
The banners feature Penn State’s international students from several different countries including, India, Sweden, Columbia, China, Saudi Arabia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“In my four years of time, I have loved every single part of it. I have found my people. I have found people who care for me,” Penn State student Shreyash said.
The students highlighted in the campaign think it’s a great way to be welcomed to a new place.
“It’s also just a fun feeling to see, especially if you come from that country and say ‘hey, I’m not alone.’ If you come alone — as I didn’t. But just to see that, ya know get reminded…’oh yeah, there’s people here from all over the world,’” Penn State student Charles Drury said.
Officials said they plan to keep the banners up as long as possible.
