State College program provides free prom dresses to area students

Finding the perfect prom dress can be tough, but the Delta Program in State College has hundreds of good, quality dresses for free.

“Prom dresses are so expensive and it’s important to make sure every body can feel beautiful on prom day and like they can go. sometimes going to dress shops is a bit overwhelming. The prices are just sky high,” Bellefonte Area High School student Gretchen Little said.

To help families out, the State College Area School District’s Delta Program has been giving away free dresses to Centre County students for the past five years.

“What we do is collect dresses throughout the year. Especially in the months preceding the event,” Delta Program Special Education Teacher Deborah Steinberg said.

Around 300 dresses are up for grabs this year, and it’s thanks to the community and local businesses donating dresses, jewelry, makeup and shoes that make the giveaway possible.

“I think everybody deserves to be able to get dressed up and look as amazing as they possibly can,” student volunteer Heaven Michaud said.

Selections can be made Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Minor alterations can be made to dresses on Saturday. Anyone shopping can enter through the Fraser Street entrance.
