SOMERSET, Pa. (WTAJ) — Somerset Police have issued a warning about a twist on an old scam in their area.
According to their Facebook post on Thursday, a 72-year-old reported to police that he lost $1,300 to a scammer who was pretending to be an attorney. The scammer said that he would not sue the victim if he purchased gift cards and gave the gift card numbers to the scammer.
Police are reminding residents that businesses and attorneys will never ask for payment like this over the phone and that if residents don’t recognize the number, they shouldn’t answer. If the call important, the caller can leave a message.
