University Park, Pa- According to a Wall Street Journal report, Penn State was one of 27 universities targeted by a Chinese hacking group looking to steal military technology research.

The Applied Research Lab (ARL) at Penn State, which develops undersea weapons technology for the Navy, was specifically targeted.

Penn State has not said if any data was stolen.

In a statement to WTAJ they said in part:

“If ever a breach is encountered, it is our responsibility to immediately notify the government and our partners – the same is true of any university with similar contracts in place. The breach would then be investigated by the federal government.”

Reports indicated that the potential breaches occurred when spear phishing emails, filled with malware, were opened.
