The proposed action sports park has received a lot of controversy since it’s inception. Many people agree it’s something that should be built, but where has been an issue.
Now the ad-hoc committee is suggesting that it be put into the Whitehall Regional Park — which is in the process of being developed on 100 acres of land along Whitehall Road.
“It’s the Whitehall Park that is in Ferguson Township. Since that park is outside of the borough…council…moved the matter to the Centre Region Council of Government,” State College Borough Communication Specialist Doug Shontz said.
Now it will be up to the Centre Region Council of Government to decide if they will take the recommendation of moving the park out of the State College Borough. The council of government will also have to consider what sports to include before the design could be approved.
Once plans are finalized, officials will look into funding it which will likely consist of grant application and local government funding.
“This wasn’t an issue that we brought up internally…we heard this from the public. And this was definitely something the public wanted to see happen. And so…you saw the people that come out during and participated with the committee whether it be the open forum they had or surveys. You see there are a lot of people that are interested in an action sports park,” Shontz said.
The Centre Region Council of government will be discussing the action sports park Monday at 7 p.m. in the State College Municipal Building.
