Police practice for active shooter situations

Local News

Brookville Police Department completed their third active shooter drill of the year Wednesday.

This time the drill was held at Penn Highlands Brookville Hospital.

The department has drills at a new location each time in order to train for different situations.

Wednesday’s drill involved actors playing gunmen entering the hospital, then police responding to a call of an active shooter.

In an active shooter situation, police only have minutes to respond to the scene.

Chief Vince Markle said they perform drills frequently because he wants his officers as prepared as possible for an active shooter situation.

“As an athlete growing up, I believe you practice how you play and this is our practice and hopefully it prepares everyone if it ever happens,” Chief Markle said.

After the drills, police and the hospital staff reviewed what happened and what actions they need to take to always be prepared.
