Police investigating cause of explosion in Elk County

Local News

Police are investigating what kind of device caused an explosion along an Elk County road Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the explosion happened on Trout Run Road at 4:19 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses in the area at the time of the explosion say it happened on the bridge on that road.

“We were working in the back and heard a big boom and all the walls and everything shook, walked out the back door and saw a big cloud of smoke coming from the one ditch,” witness Luke Caskey said, who was working at St. Marys Auto Body across the street from the bridge when the blast happened.

State Police Fire Marshal Greg Agosti said police are now trying to figure out what the explosive device was.

He said, based on the size of the device, is likely something not sold commercially.

Witnesses who heard it say they agree.

“It was pretty big compared to a firework or a firecracker because it actually shook the walls,” Caskey said.

Criminal charges are possible depending on what the device is determined to be.

Agosti said they are looking for a vehicle, but are not sure if it is connected to the explosion.

Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police in Ridgway or the St. Marys Police Department.
