PennDOT looking to keep Route 322 clear of snow

Local News

Harris Township, Centre County, Pa- Both PennDOT and Harris Township say they’re ready for the anticipated snow. Both will have crews out, looking to put down anti-ice Thursday evening.

Their goal is to keep both the rural roads and major roads, like Route 322, open and as clear as possible.

Harris Township has about 31 miles of road to keep clear when it snows. The type of storm that could hit the area has officials concerned.

“Our rural areas tend to be a problem in this type of snow event that’s forecast because we will have drifting that we’ll be fighting,” said Amy Farkas, Manager of Harris Township.

Beyond the rural areas, there are concerns about Route 322, from Seven Mountains through to Boalsburg. The last major snow event closed this section of the road.

This was due in-part to heavy traffic from Penn State drivers leaving when classes were cancelled before Thanksgiving. Also, PennDOT had some new drivers not as familiar with treating this area of road.
But, PennDOT says they’ve since brought in seasoned drivers to teach the best wasy to clear that section of Route 322. They say the keys are to spread salt frequently and make sure it hits the middle of the road.

PennDOT says they’ll continue to spread anti-ice as long as it’s required.

They also say they can help Harris Township if needed, and vice versa.

“If they do need help, the township can always try to help them in an emergency type of situation,” Farkas said.

PennDOT workers say one problem area regarding snow on Route 322, in between Seven Mountains and Boalsburg, is a place called “Maggies’ Dip”.

It’s a steeper hill that can cause tractor trailers a lot of problems. They can get hung up on the hill and cause a back-up in traffic

PennDOT told WTAJ they have a contract with a Mifflin County tow truck that Centre County can use to help clear the road of tractor trailers that get stuck.

We’re told that on Saturday, the truck will be positioned at the top of Seven Mountains.
