Three Penn State students are set to compete in an international competition in Paris next month.
“We’ve gotten really close as friends and colleagues and this year an opportunity just kind of fell in our laps to participate in a competition that L’Oreal was hosting throughout the whole nation,” head of marketing Vamshi Voruganti said.
The L’Oreal 2018 Brainstorm allows college students to pitch ideas for beauty salons of the future, which led them to turn their idea of a smart mirror into reality.
“A smart mirror is just simply a regular piece of mirror…except there’s display behind it so you can show different types of information,” head of product Yuya Ong said.
Their mirror is doing something that’s never been done before.
“It can kind of project, say your face shape. So that’s what our smart mirror is capable of doing. And I don’t think there has been a mirror that’s been able to project, say your face shape,” Ong said.
After multiple all-nighters and countless hours of work — they’re hoping it pays off in Paris.
“It provides us the opportunity to present to a pretty big audience. And that audience is gonna have some capability to make this a real thing. Which is really exciting for us,” head of operations Vince Trost said.
They’ll head to Paris next month to compete against 60 other countries and hope to be the first group to win for the United States.
