Millheim, Centre County, Pa- This past Friday, a local mother, wife, and member of the Millheim Fire Company was killed in a car crash in Potter Township.
Now, the community is mourning a woman who they say brought an energy to everything she did. WTAJ spoke those in the Millheim community who were saddened by the passing of Crystal Wetzel. They say she meant a lot to the community, including the local volunteer fire company.
When the fire siren rings out, most think of those on the front lines fighting the flames. But to do so properly, they need the right equipment.
To help raise money for that equipment, Crystal Wetzel was always in the fire hall, doing whatever it took to keep firefighters well prepared.
“Every time we have a fundraiser…I know we have our shrimp feeds Friday nights, the second Friday of every month…. and I bet Crystal did not miss one of them in close to three years,” said Delmer Homan, Chief of Millheim Fire Company.
The atmosphere of the fire hall, usually filled with happy fellowship, changed when news came of Crystal’s death.
“There was total silence…,” Chief Homan said.
A sense of disbelief on the passing of a woman whom many considered a family member.
“We have a good tight, knit group of people here and it’s sort of like another family, it’s a family atmosphere, and I know like we all feel like we basically lost a family member,” said Chief Homan.
“She was fun to work with, when we had a fundraiser, she always had a smile and was joking around, and that’s definitely going to be missed.”
