Friday was Give Kids a Smile and Vision for the Future Day in Centre County. It’s the 15th year in a row Centre Volunteers in Medicine has dedicated a day to provide kids with care they might not otherwise receive.
Pediatric Dental Care Offices and Nittany Eye Associates offered free dental and vision exams to children without insurance. They were prepared to see up to 100 children and didn’t always like what they saw.
Pediatric Dentist Dr. Matt Kremser said, “We’ve seen a lot of serious dental problems, we’ve seen absesses,we’ve seen different infections, we’ve seen a lot of dental caries, some gingivitis, gum disease.”
Dr. Kremser said it was obvious that some of the children had never been seen by a dentist.
All kids underwent exams, and had their teeth cleaned. Those who needed fillings and other non-complicated procedures received them on the spot. Others whose treatment requires anesthesia will return at no charge to their families.
After their dental visits, children underwent vision exams by staff from Nittany Eye Associates. Those who needed glasses received them free, courtesy of the eye doctors.
Centre Volunteers in Medicine also provides free medical care to people without health insurance who live or work in Centre County
