Hazardous waste clean-up in Centre County

Local News

BELLEFONTE, CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — There was a long line outside the authority’s transfer station in Bellefonte as people were dropping off pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals just to name a few.

The items were sorted. Containers that could be recycled were.

The rest will be properly disposed of.

Officials say getting the chemicals out of your home can help keep everyone safer.

It is the protection of your animals, your pets, your kids, but even your emergency responders. If you would have something in your house that would catch fire or something, it helps to protect them because if those chemicals burn it can create a toxic soup. They don’t know what they’re responding to. So that’s one of the reasons it’s important to do it.

-Joanne Shafer, Deputy Director, Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority

We were told, before noon today, more than 250 people dropped off their waste. If those numbers continue, that may be a new record for those who are participating in the cleanup.

The authority will be collecting hazardous waste again Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
