Gov. Wolf talks severance tax in Johnstown

Local News

Governor Tom Wolf made a stop in our region on Wednesday. He met with folks in Johnstown to talk more about his proposed severance tax.

Wolf said other states producing natural gas, like Alaska, Texas, Oklahoma, have similar taxes in place, and the Pennsylvania should join them.

The governor added he understands folks get nervous when they hear the word “taxes,” but he wanted to reassure them that the severance tax would be reasonable and necessary for the improvement of statewide-communities.

“It’s different. It’s really different, and I can imagine, and I understand, that some people might be scared of it because it’s new. We’ve never seen that before, and yet, this is something that can make a big difference in a place like Johnstown,” Gov. Wolf said.

He explained the tax would be imbedded into the costs of natural gas and other resources coming from the state, and he hopes the funds coming from his proposed tax will help communities prevent any future issues.
