Bellefonte, Centre County, Pa- March, 28 marks the final Friday of the month… and in Bellefonte it means the start of a new monthly initiative to get more people downtown.
“Friday in the Fonte“ will see downtown Bellefonte businesses open later than usual on the last Friday of every month.
It replaces “First Sunday“, a similar monthly event for downtown businesses on (as the titles suggests) the first Sunday of every month.
Business owners say they feel they will bring in more customers at the start of the weekend… and Downtown Bellefonte Inc. took that feedback and created “Friday in the Fonte“.
“Friday is just that night where you get to relax, and unwind if you don’t have to travel far, you can have a really great time in your downtown,“ said Melissa Hombosky, a Board Member for Downtown Bellefonte Inc.
Hombosky, and others from Downtown Bellefonte Inc. say changing their monthly event from Sunday to Friday makes it easier for downtown businesses to be successful because they’ll no longer need to hire extra help to stay open on Sunday’s.
It will also keep many businesses open later than their normal 5:00 p.m. closing time on Friday night.
These later hours could give owners a taste of all the business they’ve been missing by closing down early.
“I think longer business hours on Friday’s will suit the people who live in the town, and people who work at Penn State who have trouble getting into town at 5:30 p.m., by the time that businesses close. So I think it will offer more opportunities for locals to shop downtown,“ Hombosky said.
