Local News

Pretty soon you’ll be able to play sports, no matter what the weather is outside.

A new indoor sports facility is opening this week in Centre County.

The 70,000 square foot Nittany Valley Sports Centre has been in the works for years and this Saturday, it’ll finally open its doors.

Wenyi Zhu and her son Edmond are checking out Nittany Valley Sports Centre.

“It’s just like the pictures online it’s huge,” Zhu said.

They’re excited for this new indoor sport center to open.

“My son attend the State College Little League Baseball program and he has a lot of baseball friends and some of them are interested in the baseball program,” Zhu said.

A group of investors started planning Nittany Valley Sports Centre six years  ago.
It’s taken the last 8 months to finish building it.

Danny Orton, with the Sports Centre says he and the other founders wanted a way to make a difference in children’s lives.

“The core of what we were trying to accomplish is really to have a big impact on kids and you know we always say it’s a little corny but we feel sports in general will save kids,” Danny Orton, Assistant Operations Director with the Nittany Valley Sports Centre, said.

You can to take classes or join leagues for a variety of sports for a fee, any time of year.

” [My son can] spend some time in Winter, because it’s such a long Winter season.”

Phase one it’s what’s being finished right now.
For phase two, staff with the sports centre plan on adding another facility to this building, which will have more basketball and volleyball courts and also a grass field next to it.
That will be paid for with a 1.5 million dollar grant from the state.
They hope construction for that will start in the fall.
