Debate over potential casino in State College

Local News

State College, Pa- WTAJ spoke with a local business across the street from the Nittany Mall… where a mini-casino, if approved, would be located. The business was in favor of the casino, but there were others who weren’t in love with the idea of a little piece of Las Vegas coming to town.

“State College is a great as it is and I don’t think a casino would help it, I think would more hurt it,” said State College resident and mother Ressa Cornwall.

Cornwall feels a casino would undermine the family values of the town.

But Qaker Steak & Lube Service Supervisor Harley Packer disagreed, citing it would help local business

“It will bring in a lot of business for us… people will come over there and of course they’re gonna get hungry once they’re in the casino for so long. And then they’ll come over and have some wings. It will be a nice little business uproar for us,” Packer said.

Packer also says a casino would be an added attraction for those visiting State College.

She told WTAJ, “I think that it would not only improve businesses money-wise obviously, but it would also improve tourists… I’m sure they would want to know… what’s all that because casino’s typically are flashy.”

Those opposed feel the glitz and glamor will also bring problems to the area

“I think this area’s family friendly as it is and i think casino’s promote gambling and undermine just good honest work,” Cornwall said.

There’s many steps that have to happen before a casino constructed by the Nittany Mall… including a community hearing where locals are invited to give their input…which includes voicing any concerns.
