Crunching the numbers: how two Centre Co. municipalities a top 100 list of safest places in U.S.A.

State College, Pa- Two Centre County municipalities are on a top-100 list of the safest places in the nation.

WTAJ looked into the statistics the list’s creator used to place both Patton and Ferguson Townships on their list.

Each year, every municipality must report their crime statistics to the FBI. “Safewise” then collected data from the FBI and used two specific metrics to determine which areas are the safest: violent crime and property crime.

There was also one key requirement to be eligible for safewise’s list.

“They only looked at cities that were larger than the median population in each state,” said Doug Ericson, Manager of Patton Township.

Most recent records show Patton Township has a population of just over 16,000 people. The township came in at number 65 on safewise’s 2019 list.

“It was quite an honor, just a testament to the hard work that the men and women of Patton Township Police Department do on a daily basis,” said Tyler Jolley, Chief of the Patton Township Police Department.

Chief Jolley added: “Over the past year we have seen a downward trend in the crime-rates here in the township…. it’s something we’re looking into and going to try to continue.”

Jolley says violent crime in particular has been on a consistent downward trend. Jolley also said property crime isn’t running rampant, but it is still an issue because more bussinesses are coming into the area.

“Our property crimes are a little bit up in that we have a lot of the big-box stores, so we have a lot of the offences that we are able to clear out very quickly typically,” Chief Jolley said.

Many in Patton Township say they hope this isn’t the last time their home municipality appears on this safety list.

As previously noted, Patton Township wasn’t the only Centre County municipality on safewise’s list.

Ferguson Township is listed as number 93 on the list.

On safewise’s list of the safest college towns in the nations, State College was ranked number 14.
