Charges filed for gun incident at local school

State Police are investigating after they say a student brought an airsoft gun to a local school.

Police said a 16-year-old student in the Bellwood-Antis School District apparently didn’t realize he had the airsoft pistol in his backpack before going to school Monday morning.

According to police, the student told another student that he had the gun, and also showed it to other students on the bus. Police said he also posted the incident on social media, which sparked alarm in the Bellwood community.

Officials said the student who had the gun, and the student the suspect allegedly told are both facing disorderly conduct charges.

Superintendent Tom McInroy said while this was an honest mistake, it is an important lesson learned. He said coming forward immediately is the best policy to ensure safety and avoid evacuation.

“Working together as a team between parents and students and faculty and staff here is the best way to make sure everybody is safe. Sometimes rumor and innuendo that we see on Facebook or any kind of social media sometimes runs counter to what we are trying to do,” McInroy said.
