Business owners and locals feel “Friday in the Fonte” will bring more shoppers downtown

Local News

Bellefonte, Centre County, Pa- Downtown Bellefonte Inc. is looking to bring more people downtown on the last Friday of each month.

Friday, March, 29, Friday in the Fonte kicked-off. It’s a night where businesses will stay open later than usual for customers.

Members of the Downtown Bellefonte Inc. board say more businesses are participating in Friday in the Fonte compared to the monthly event it’s replacing, First Sunday.

Why? Business owners feel that more people are willing to go out on the town on a Friday night. Local owners that WTAJ spoke with say they’re excited to see their stores packed every month.

Each Friday in the Fonte will have a theme. The first theme, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day is Lucky to live here.

Local businesses are on board with the different themes.

Here we’ll be doing each theme, each month, we’ll be going along with that theme, said Loren Stamm, General Manager of Bella Vina Wine Bar.

Stamm is offering discounted drinks and a special mixed-drink related to each theme.

This Friday night at Confer’s Jewelers, there was a lucky drawing bag giving customers varied discounts. The jeweler also gave out free charm bracelets of the Centre County Courthouse in honor of the first Friday in the Fonte.

Monteca Confer, owner of Confer’s Jewelers, says coordinating with the Friday in the Fonte theme helps everyone’s cause.

When we all come together and have something exciting happening downtown, people are gonna want to come downtown as destination, have dinner here, shop in all the shops, they know everybody’s open and having a special…. I think people will think of Bellefonte as a fun place to go on the last Friday of every month, Confer said.

Other downtown business owners like Joyce Mills, who owns Helen Foxx & Co., agreed with Confer.

It’s gonna impact [business] very well, cause the store is going to be packed tonight, Mills said.

WTAJ also caught up with locals checking out a featured food truck. They said they’ll definitely be back for future Friday’s in the Fonte.

It’s nice to do this on the last Friday of each month… something to look forward to, said Barbara Kuzio from Zion, Centre County.

Her husband Bill Kuzio added: I think if they keep doing this with nice weather, and as it gets towards summer, I think more people will come out.

For the start of Friday in the Fonte there were over a dozen downtown businesses participating.

WTAJ was told the goal is to add more new businesses to the event each month.
