Brighter future for local ice arena

Local News

Building improvements could mean a brighter future for a local ice skating arena. The North Central Recreation Center (NCRC) in Ebensburg is the sister site of  First Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial.

Cambria County and  NCRC representatives showed off  of lighting improvements on Tuesday. They said the  arena’s lights, upgraded to high efficiency LEDs, shine four to five times brighter than the originals and are expected to save nearly $6,300 a year in energy costs.

Steve St. John is the general manager, at both the 1st Summit Arena and the NCRC.  He said “Lighting’s very important with the speed of the game, as well as for learning to skate, but whenever you have a balanced sport, where you’re relying on someone’s balance to skate, it’s very important that they be able to see as well, especially with people moving so fast with their body as well as projectiles like a puck.”

He added that residents will also notice improved seating and better climate control in the summer at the ice arena. The improvements at the area were completed as part of the county’s latest capital campaign.
