A former area school is taking on a new name and a new mission. The Nehemiah Project is an evangelical Christian organization that’s revitalizing the lower Fairview neighborhood. They’re headquartered in the former Wright Elementary School in Altoona.
They have big plans for the area surrounding the former school which they’ll officially rename next week at a grand opening. When we stopped by on Tuesday, they were sprucing up the Wright School gym, where the activities will be centered next Monday, October 15.
They’ll have two bouncy houses, basketball, a petting zoo, and other activities for kids. Highlights for adults will be a ribbon-cutting, the name reveal, and the organization’s big plans for building homes in the neighborhood.
“When I say building homes, I’m not suggesting that they’re going to be single family dwellings. They may be townhouses, they may be apartments, but they’re going o be living accommodations, here in this neighborhood and brand new structures and so that’s another game changer,” said Nehemiah Project CEO Peter Joudry.
Joudry believes the project will send a message to the neighborhood that this area still matters and that they have the power to invest and to change life.
