Altoona woman facing charges after allegedly abusing 14-month-old son

Local News

An Altoona woman is facing several charges for allegedly making her 14-month-old son do military style push-ups and sit-ups.

Police said the boy’s grandparents found bruises all over his body when they were bathing him last December.

Morgan Porter, 21, is charged with aggravated assault of a child, simple assault against a child under 12 years old and endangering the welfare of a child.

Officials said Porter and her fiancée, Devin Heintzelman, were spanking the child when he was crying, fussing or drooling. The boy was also reportedly left alone in his room for long periods of time in their 19th Avenue home.

Police said Heintzelman is a Marine and was using his military training on the child.

“He acted more or less like a drill instructor of sorts, trying to get the child to do push ups and calisthenics. Having him lead off with his right foot all the time, rather than his left foot,” Altoona police Lt. Jeffrey Pratt said.

Pratt said the bruise marks on the child’s body were from the treatment.

Police said Heintzelman is currently away at reserve training and will turn himself in when he returns to the area in two weeks.
