ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — An area bus company is taking a new look at an Altoona to State College route.
This week, at Amtran’s regular meeting, a board member floated the idea of a shared route between the two communities and that put the idea on the table again. Turns out, it’s a good time to explore the issue since Amtran is putting together a transit development plan, a process that happens every few years.
Amtran General Manager Eric Wolf says, “I think it’s an exciting idea. We’ve looked at it on and off over the years, people have tried different things and it just seems like a nut we have yet to crack, and that’s what makes it interesting.
Wolf says it’s also timely issue since Tyrone officials recently broached the subject of a Tyrone to Altoona route. However, he notes that both the Altoona to State College, and Altoona to Tyrone trips have been tried before.
“Certainly, on the face of it, it looks like an easy fix, but it’s been tried in the past with marginal success, so we want to be very careful, get our ducks in a row, look at all the numbers make our best projection before we actually go and and spend taxpayer dollars on an experiment,” Wolf says.
Right now, Amtran is just in the process of gathering information in the idea. Wolf says an Altoona to State College route could involve buses or vans.
