Many amateur golfers think an extreme backswing, results in the best score, but a new study finds that type of wind-up is more likely to lead to back injury. Instead, a safer style of play leads to a better overall result.

By analyzing 150 golf swings, researchers at Florida Gulf Coast University found that that a full swing places more than 100 pounds more pressure on the back than a three-quarter swing.

Their study showed that the three-quarter swing, was safer for the back and also increased a golfer’s smash factor – allowing them to hit the ball more efficiently.
