Local Kids Looking for Mentors

STATE COLLEGE — Big Brothers and Sisters’ waiting list is growing and they’re looking for people to sign up to help mentor kids.

The Youth Service Bureau in Centre County says they have around 80 kids who aren’t paired up yet.

“Bigs can really open doors for kids,” says Andrea Boyles, the CEO for the YSB. “When that happens, we know that their imaginations grow; their goals and dreams grow and kids do better.”

That’s what Taylor Blackman is hoping to do for his little, 10-year-old Ammati.

“We normally go out exploring,” says Ammati.

The two brothers – who aren’t related by blood but have a special relationship, regardless – are hitting the wetlands.

“I think it’s just important to get him out here,” says Blackman. “He’s really excited and it gives him more things to be excited about.”

Part of the reason Centre County has a frequent turnover is due to college students signing up to be Bigs- when their summer rolls around, the local kids are left without mentors.
