An area physician has been named one of the 100 most influential people in healthcare by “Modern Healthcare” magazine. Dr Andrew Gurman is number 27 on the list. The Altoona doctor took over in June as the President of the American Medical Association.
As a spokesman for 200,000 physicians in the nation, Dr. Gurman says he’s been calling attention to issues that affect the health of the American people. They include the high cost of prescription drugs, high health insurance deductibles, and health insurance networks which narrow patient choices.
The A.M.A. leader says he’ll continue his organization’s focus on gun violence as a public health issue.
“I want to make it very clear, this is not about second amendment rights, this is not about anybody’s right to own a gun,” Dr. Gurman says. “That is a totally separate and political discussion, however 33,000 people a year die from the barrel of a gun. Not all of that is criminal activity, but the fact is, we don’t know very much about that because we refuse to study it,” he adds.
Dr Gurman says gun violence needs to be studied as a public health problem, but federal funding is prohibited for any activity that could lead to gun control.
