Babies wear red hats to raise awareness for American Heart Association

Celebrating Seniors

February is American Heart Month and the American Heart Association is marking the occasion by raising awareness for congenital heart defects.

Through the organization’s “Little Hat Big Heart” program, they’re donating knitted hats to local maternity units. Organizers said the program started back in 2014 and has grown.

The goal is to educate new parents that congenital heart defects can be minor or major, and can happen to any newborn.

“By raising the awareness we are helping people understand what they need to be aware of, what they need to look out for and how to advocate for themselves when they have newborns in the hospital,” American Heart Association Communication Director Sean Dreher said.
