Kids designing their own playgrounds? SC Elementary Students giving input on development plans

Local News

State College, Pa- As construction continues on State College Area School District (SCASD) Elementary Schools, the community has a chance to improve a spot kids probably enjoy the most…. the playground.

Currently three elementary schools are under construction:

-Radio Park Elementary

-Corl Street Elementary

-Spring Creek Elementary (new name for Houserville Elementary)

These three schools will get new playgrounds this summer.

But, SCASD is going a step further… they’re looking to upgrade all elementary school playgrounds.

SCASD says they are looking to modernize their playgrounds by creating innovative ways to give students better physical and mental exercise.

To help design the updated playgrounds, SCASD is inviting those who will use the playground the most, elementary students, to give their input.

“Who better to ask right? I mean they’re the ones that are gonna be using the playgrounds…. and they’re the most knowledgeable sources about playgrounds. So we’ve asked all of the students from kindergarden to 5th grade to complete a graphic organizer, which is essentially just a little portfolio with some writing and some drawings where they can express some of their wishes for features on the playgrounds,” said Chris Rosenblum, Director of Communications for SCASD.

So far, the playground developer has collected about 3,000 student suggestions.

The district is also working with a 45-person task force comprised of parents, teachers, and staff who are gathering input from district parents (via a survey) for their thoughts on the playground designs.
