Barron Whited, an Agora Cyber Charter School Guidance Counselor, discusses how you can help your college student that is dealing with loneliness.
College Students Coping Loneliness
Many students may be feeling disconnected from family and friends as they start their first year of college. They may be experiencing loneliness from the campus community as they struggle to find social activities to participate in, or feeling anxious, dependent on others, or inferior due to low self-esteem. These feelings can keep young people from forming close relationships with other peers on campus. Here are some suggestions for parents to help their son/daughter through difficult period of transition:
1. Recognize Strengths and Talents
2. Create A Positive Image
3. Initiate Conversations With Other Students
4. Eat With New Students
5. Be Yourself
6. Seek Campus Support
