BeThere Campaign

Central PA Live

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and the Altoona VA is joining the national effort to prevent veteran suicide.

The Altoona James E. Van Zandt Hospital is joining the national effort to raise awareness through the BeThere campaign. This effort works to bring attention and support to those affected, emphasizing that one small act could save the life of a veteran or a service member in crisis.

  • 20 Veterans die each day from suicide, and 6 of the 20 were using VA Health Service in 2013 and 2014.
  • Veterans account for 18% of all deaths from suicide amongst U.S. adults, while veterans constituted just 8.5% of the population.
  • Approximately 67% of all Veteran deaths from suicide were the result of firearms injuries.

If you are a veteran or know a veteran that needs help, call the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255, press 1 or visit Veterans Crisis Line onlineMake the Connection or Van Zandt Health Services.
