The spotlight is on a shadier time in U.S. History Thursday; It’s National Bootlegger Day!
January 17th apparently has a big connection to the illegal activity, it’s the birthday of famous bootlegger and gangster Al Capone.
Templeton Rye Whiskey was also created on January 17 during the Prohibition Era.
The Prohibition Era started back in the 1920s after congress passed the 18th amendment making alcohol illegal, but Americans still had a taste for liguor, so bootleggers began smuggling various brews in from Canada and Mexico until they started distilling their own.
This lasted until 1933 when Congress repealed it.
