The last Wednesday of March is Manatee Appreciation Day, an opportunity to honor these gentle giants!
Manatees, also called “sea cows” are relatives of the elephant. They aren’t the cutest animals but a fun fact a bout them, it’s though that sailors hundreds of years ago thought manatees were mermaids.
Manatees live in warm Florida waters during the winter and migrate north during the warm summer months.
They have no natural enemies. They can live about 60 years, but they are often killed in collissions with boats.
Remember to slow down the next time you’re out on the water.
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Manatee Appreciation Day, consider donating to a manatee conservation program.
