The story of this hearty stew is of course the clams!
They’re usually simmered with milk or cream along with potatoes, onions and celery, then there’s the Manhattan version which has tomatoes.
Where does the word “chowder” come from? There’s a bit of a debate here.
The French word for cauldron is “chaudiere”. The English word “jowter” means fish peddler.
