Rapper 21 Savage was arrested in Atlanta Sunday
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has taken the Grammy nominated rapper into custody.
ICE says the rapper is a U.K. resident in the U.S. illegally.
The rapper has long said he’s from Atlanta, but ICE says he moved to the U.S. as a teen and his entire public persona is fake.
He was taken into custody in a sting operation early Sunday in Metro Atlanta.
ICE says he entered the U.S. Illegally in 2005, but became illegal when he did not leave the U.S. when he Visa expired the following year.
ICE notes in addition to violating federal immigration law, he was convicted on felony drug charges in 2014.
Removal proceedings are now underway.
ICE says it will await the outcome of his case before a federal immigration judge to determine what’s next.
The rapper’s attorney released a statement saying they’re working to clear up any misunderstandings, and that the rapper is a good role model to young people in the country and is also involved in various program to help underprivileged youth understand finances.
