With heavy rain and flash flooding possible in some spots Thursday night into Friday, it is important to refresh on the definitions of flood watches and warnings before the rain and flooding arrives. A flash flood is a sudden and fast flow of elevated water levels. Flash floods are most common along smaller streams and creeks and in areas of poor drainage. Flash flood watches are issued by the National Weather Service when the forecast calls for conditions that may be favorable for flash flooding. A flash flood warning is issued when flash flooding is occurring, going to occur, or is likely to occur. Whether a flash flood warning or watch is issued or not, the most important thing to remember when coming across a flooded roadway is to ‘turn around, don’t drown.’
