A major earthquake of an 8.3 magnitude struck off of the coast of Chile near Tarapaca. This is an extremely strong earthquake of which the Earth averages less than one of this strength each year. The energy dispersed by the quake is equivalent of detonating over 6 million tons of TNT. Buoys off of the coast of Chile have indicated a tsunami of 6.9'. Tsunami watches and warnings are in effect along the coast of South America with eyes on land bordering the Pacific, especially off the coast of South America. It is still too early to know the extent of damage or how far a significant tsunami will be felt. If a tsunami would make it to California or Hawaii, it would not be until very late at night. Information can be followed at the Tsunami Warning Center's website
