Police following up on leads to find man suspected of taking woman hostage

EMPORIUM, CAMERON COUNTY - The search for a man accused of taking a bank employee hostage resumed this morning in Cameron County.

Emporium Borough Police Chief John Lovett said authorities are following up on possible leads to find Tom Smith. The 58-year-old from Clear Creek is wanted in connection to an incident that started around 1 p.m. Wednesday on Carson Street.

Police said Smith held a 39-year-old woman at gunpoint in her car. The woman was able escape a few minutes later by jumping out of the moving vehicle on South Broad Street. It continued heading south until it swerved off the road and struck the front porch of a home.

Smith then ran from the scene.

Police called off the search overnight.

Smith was last seen in the Whittimore Hill area. He was wearing a tan shirt and jeans.

He is considered dangerous and could still be armed.

Emporium Borough Police and State Police from the Emporium Barracks are investigating. The U.S. Marshal Service, Mountaineer Search and Rescue, and multiple police departments are also involved in the manhunt.
